Italian school of the XVIIth century. Portrait... - Lot 75 - Le Floc'h
Italian school of the XVIIth century. Portrait of a Roman emperor, known as Pseudo Vitellius, from the antique bust in the Grimani collection in Venice. White marble bust for the head and veined red for the armour. It rests on a green marble pedestal, probably brought back. High. : 38 cm - Width : 28 cm. Related works: - Rome, first half of the 2nd century AD, Bust of a man known as "Vitellius Grimani", marble, Venice, Museo archeologico nazionale di Venezia. The work is inspired by the only Roman copy discovered in 1505 during an excavation of the Quirinale by the Venetian Cardinal Domenico Grimani (1461-1523). After the Cardinal's death, the work was sent to Venice and exhibited at the Palazzo Ducale until 1593. Considered as early as the 16th century as the portrait of the Emperor Vitellius, it was widely copied, notably to represent this emperor in a series of busts illustrating the Life of the Twelve Caesars of Suetonius.
