*Armand BARBÈS (1809-1870) republican politician....

*Armand BARBÈS (1809-1870) republican politician. L.A.S., The Hague 19 June 1868, [to Léon Laurent-Pichat]; 5 pages in-8.

Beautiful letter of exile on freedom. He thanks the "dear and valiant citizen" for his book [Avant le jour], "a truly patriotic work and a force to shake our torpor [...] Your verses are very often very dark. One feels that they come from an indignant soul and a bleeding heart. ...] Yet you tell us that the day is coming. Barbès fears for freedom what the Liberal parties can do with it, deflect it and bastardise it. The Guizots, the Thiers and so many others with Orléanism at their back, are there to remind us of this. France's mission is to give equality to the world, freedom cannot be lacking afterwards; I mean true freedom, which can only exist among equals " .
