*Leon Bloy (1846-1917). L.A.S. and autograph...

*Leon Bloy (1846-1917). L.A.S. and autograph manuscript signed, [1874]-1890; 2 pages in-12 and 1 page in-4 with erasures and corrections.

In Germer Baillière [in late May 1874 or shortly after], on
his article "Nouveaux propos d'un entrepreneur de démolitions", devoted to Thomas Carlyle's Histoire de la Révolution française: "M. Léon Bloy begs his enemy M. Germer Baillière to read the article on Carlyle which is on the 4th page of this journal. Mr. Léon Bloy has, of course, said nothing new about this man of genius, which could only be told by another Carlyle, but he has endeavoured to show it to the inattentive and the superficial of this world "...
Paris October 30, 1890. Draft of his "Encyclical" to the Bishops of France, in support of the cause of the beatification of Christopher Columbus. Bloy points out "a new book [his Christopher Columbus before the bulls] intended to bring back the attention of the Christian world to the exceptional cause of Christopher Columbus, pending for 20 years before the Sacred Congregation of Rites and promoted by the glorious Pius IX". He warns against "the infernal maneuvers of contemporary impiety to oppose the beatification of the Christian hero", and asks that the clergy oppose "the diabolical conspiracy which is presently threatening the Church..." The carefully corrected Latin translation follows.
An imprint of the Latin text is attached, with a note a.s. by Bloy: "Encyclical letter to all the Bishops of the world".
