Expert : Mrs Amélie MARCILHAC - info@marcilhacexpert.com Attracted by the decorative arts, Jean Dunand turned to brassware at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1912, he became interested in the art of lacquer and began his training with the Japanese master Seizo Sugawara, who had already trained Eileen Gray. His art is drawn from the Asian technique. Plant sap is mixed with pigments and other materials. The first layer is placed on a support, left to dry for several days in a humid place, sanded, before repeating the operation, sometimes a dozen times. In 1921, he presented his first panels, screens and furniture at the Georges Petit gallery. This powerful player in the French art market since the end of the 19th century was a great promoter of the Impressionists and a rival of Paul Durand-Ruel. Success was not long in coming, which earned him prestigious commissions, notably panels for the interior decoration of the liners Atlantique and Normandie, or for the Palais de la Porte Dorée. The recognition was such that Jean Dunand was appointed president of the lacquer section of the Paris International Exhibition in 1939. In our works, the theme of fish swimming in the sea bed between the rays of light recalls the Japanese influence and evokes certain drawings from Hokusai's Manga. The golden and glittering scales of this serene swim are suggested by a variation of patterns and geometric lines, reminiscent of the artist's sumptuous brassware vases.
