At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970, Citroën surprises with a brand new model which is totally against the current of the brand. The SM, a luxurious 4-seater sports coupé, is equipped with a 2.7-litre, 170 bhp Maserati V6 engine with 5-speed gearbox and front-wheel drive, hydropneumatic suspension, exceptional servo-controlled steering, 4 disc brakes, a glued windscreen, a bank of 6 headlamps, etc. Speed, comfort, safety, nothing has been left to chance. At the time, we read: "Specialists are unanimous: the Maserati-powered Citroën SM has a set of qualities never before seen on a car. It has exceptional braking and unequalled comfort for a car travelling at this speed. The SM is the perfect synthesis of opposing qualities: exceptional safety and comfort combined with the high performance of sports cars." André Costa, test journalist for Auto Journal, did a complete test of the SM in December 1970: "A6-Avalon/Fontainebleau junction (162 km). There is a lot of night traffic in the other direction and it is not negligible in ours, the speed and the nervousness of the SM, its road holding in curves and its braking power allow to go fast. At the end of the stage the lap time marks 51 minutes, or an average of 190.5 km/h." Designed by the famous Robert Opron, the SM's aerodynamic bodywork is a marvel of balance with a line dedicated to speed. Inside, he opted for a futuristic and personalized style. The very complete dashboard is equipped with an original ovoid-shaped instrument panel. The centre console and gearshift lever have also received special attention. The bucket seats appear very comfortable and are a real invitation to travel. Replacing the carburettor version (type SB) from October 1972, the type SC with Bosch electronic injection engine is more powerful (178 hp) and more reliable while being less greedy. The manufacturer claimed a top speed of 228 km/h. Iconic in the history of the brand with the chevrons, the SM is totally different. With its Italian engine, its comfort and its cutting-edge technology, the SM offers style and performance that never goes out of fashion. This Citroën sports car was a great commercial success with nearly 13,000 units sold, of which about 3,500 were equipped with a fuel injection engine and a 5-speed gearbox. Built in September 1973, our SM with electronic injection was first registered in December 1973, so it is a 1974 model. Historically, it had only one registration number in the Hauts-de-Seine region. It was probably a second hand car when it entered the collection of the previous owner, a Citroën dealer in Saint Cloud, in 1989. Indeed, the previous owner dated back to February 1977 and between December 1973 and February 1977, i.e. a little over two years, the car must have been in the hands of its first owner. When the owner gets the car back, it comes out of a long storage near his Citroën garage. Once stored again, the car was completely restored, both mechanically and in terms of bodywork and paintwork. These works are completed in April 2005, the car has then 122 000 km. Mainly used between 2005 and 2012, it travels about 7500 km, going to Germany (2006) and the UK (2007). The odometer shows today (1)29 483 km. Its scarab brown metallic color is referenced AC427, a very elegant color that suits it very well. The optional tan leather upholstery is available for the interior, which is in a splendid state of preservation. A Blaupunkt radio is present. The interior and exterior presentation is splendid, the car having been well cared for. Under the bonnet everything looks "as new". Very little used in recent years and although parked in a nice heated garage, it will need a service to enjoy it.
