Female idol of the "Spedos" type in marble,... - Lot 72 - Le Floc'h
Female idol of the "Spedos" type in marble, arms crossed on the belly (gap in the feet, reattached at the base of the neck). One can see the trace of the eyebrows in relief. Cyclades, Early Cycladic II, Keros-Syros culture, circa 2800-2300 B.C. Height 14,5 cm Plexiglas base. Provenance : Collection of Mr. Paul A. (1899-1976), former director of the chalcography of the Louvre, founder then president of the Presses Universitaires de France from 1934 to 1968. Accompanied by a declaration on honor of the daughter-in-law of the collector confirming that the object comes from the collection of her father-in-law. The use of these statuettes found in all the Cyclades is not known but it is known that they were once painted in polychrome. Today it is their purity and the balance of the schematized forms that fascinate. Artists of the twentieth century such as Brancusi were certainly inspired by them during their journey towards abstraction. The quality of the marble of our statuette, the harmony of its proportions and its excellent state of conservation make it a rare specimen.
