Marble loutrophorus, the body godronné,... - Lot 71 - Le Floc'h
Marble loutrophorus, the body godronné, the handles with volute (restorations). Greek art (?). Height : 31 cm. Height : 31 cm Parallelepipedic base in black marble. Provenance : collection of Mr. Paul A. (1899-1976), former director of the chalcography of the Louvre, founder then president of the Presses Universitaires de France from 1934 to 1968. Noted "ach. 1956, Attic loutrophore of the 4th century B.C." on a handwritten slip. Accompanied by a declaration on honor of the daughter-in-law of the collector confirming that the object comes from the collection of her father-in-law. The loutrophorus is a type of Greek vase characterized by a slender neck and two handles, used to carry water for ritual baths. Our loutrophorus is fake, certainly an element of funerary stele. Indeed, the loutrophores were also used by the ancient Greeks to mark the location of tombs.
