Circular cookie medallion with a dexter profile of Napoleon - Lot 189
Circular cookie medallion with a dexter profile of Napoleon Bonaparte, the circumference decorated with a frieze of oak leaves, suspension hole on the reverse. Gilded brass border decorated with a frieze of palmettes in a rectangular frame of blackened wood. Sevres, after Jean-Bertrand ANDRIEU, early 19th century. Diameter : 15,5 cm The sculptor Jean-Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822), moving from Bordeaux to Paris in 1786, became Napoleon's principal medallist. Here he engraves this imperial profile after a drawing by Vivant Denon, then Director of the Louvre Museum and close to the emperor. The Sèvres cookies do not show any mark before 1800 and very rarely an oval in hollow between 1800 and 1848.
