Bronze statuette representing the helmeted goddess Minerva, in contrapposto position, leaning on her right leg, arms spread, hands open. The chest bears the aegis decorated with a mask of Medusa and snakes, the eyes are inlaid with silver (missing fingers, the attribute of the left hand and the crest of the helmet, cracks in the back). Beautiful smooth green patina and very high quality of the casting. Rome, 1st century. Height : 14,3 cm. 14,3 cm Circular base of red marble from Morocco. Provenance : Collection of Mr. Paul A. (1899-1976), former director of the chalcography of the Louvre, founder then president of the Presses Universitaires de France from 1934 to 1968. Noted "ach. 1949, statuette of Athena, Greek work, 5th century B.C. Attic style, provenance unknown, beautiful green patina" on a handwritten slip. Accompanied by a sworn statement from the collector's daughter-in-law confirming that the object came from her father-in-law's collection.
