Bronze statuette representing the goddess Athena wearing a helmet with crest, wearing in pectoral the aegis lined with snakes and decorated with a mask of the Gorgon, holding an owl in his right hand, the eyes formerly inlaid (probably missing the spear in the left hand). Rome, 1st century. Height. 14,5 cm Cubic base of speckled porphyry. Provenance : Collection of Mr. Paul A. (1899-1976), former director of the chalcography of the Louvre, founder then president of the Presses Universitaires de France from 1934 to 1968. Noted "ach. 1956, statuette of Athena Parthenos, neo-Attic style, 1st century B.C., bronze patina" on a handwritten slip. Accompanied by a declaration on honor of the daughter-in-law of the collector confirming that the object comes from the collection of her father-in-law.
