Jan BRUEGHEL II, called the young (Antwerp,... - Lot 20 - Le Floc'h
Jan BRUEGHEL II, called the young (Antwerp, 1601 - Antwerp, 1678) and Pieter von AVONT (Mechelen, 1600 - Antwerp, 1652). The rest of the Holy Family in a landscape. Copper (parquetry dislodged) monogrammed lower left: "P.V.A." (small lacks). Height : 40 cm 40 cm - Width : 59 cm History : Sale Paris, palais Galliera, 28.06.1962, n°136. This refined copper is an excellent example of the multi-handed paintings made in the Antwerp milieu of the 17th century. Here Pieter von Avont paints the figures and Jan Brueghel the landscape, with the beautiful luminous gap of the rising sun behind the hills, at the bottom of a river valley. We discover a village, a shepherdess milking a cow and her herd. The clarity of the atmosphere, the precision of the details (the foliage of the trees, the basket and the crown of flowers, the tulips and the lively squirrel in the foreground) gave the Brueghels an unsurpassable reputation at the time as painters of the cabinet of amateurs, who mixed works of art and specimens of natural science. The craze for this type of virtuoso paintings, where the plant species are precisely described and identifiable despite their miniaturization, led to commissions from all over Europe.
