Terracotta statue of a diadumene athlete (missing legs). Height Height : 29 cm Circular base of yellow marble of Siena. Moulding made by Mr Champion, former chief moulder of the Musée des Antiquités Nationales, of the replica found in Smyrna of the diadumene of Polyclitus kept in the collection of Carlos Blaker during his loan to the Louvre. The original statuette is now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Provenance: Collection of Mr. Paul A. (1899-1976), former director of the Louvre's chalcography, founder and then president of the Presses Universitaires de France from 1934 to 1968. Noted "ach. 1927, 1st proof" on a handwritten sheet. The Diadumene is a famous statue attributed to the Greek sculptor Polyclitus (5th century BC). The original was in bronze, but the preserved copies are Roman copies in marble or terracotta. They represent a young athlete whose head is girded with the headband of victory. Expert : Mister Antoine Tarantino, contact@galerietarantino.com, 06 15 44 68 46
