Fragmentary relief probably coming from a marble stele sculpted with two young women (Demeter and Persephone?) in profile, in procession, one holding an ear of wheat in her right hand (restorations). Greek or Augustan art, 4th century BC or 1st century AD. Height : 25 cm 25 cm - Width : 30 cm Set in an antique red marble frame. Provenance : Collection of Mr. Paul A. (1899-1976), former director of the Louvre's chalcography, founder then president of the Presses Universitaires de France from 1934 to 1968. Noted "ach. 1947, Demeter and Persephone, fragment in low relief from a Penteelic marble stele, Greece, Attica, late 5th c. BC" on a handwritten slip. Accompanied by a sworn statement from the collector's daughter-in-law confirming that the object came from her father-in-law's collection.
