Hale ASAF (1905 -1938). Portrait of Monsieur... - Lot 32 - Le Floc'h
Hale ASAF (1905 -1938). Portrait of Monsieur Paul Henri Michel with bow tie. Oil on canvas signed lower right, inscribed on the back on the stretcher: "Paul Henri Michel, circa 1935 and painted by Halé Asaf, wife of Antonio Aniante". Small dents, cracks, small chip and missing. Height 65 cm - Width 55 cm Provenance: Family of Paul Henri Michel. Note: Hale ASAF, born into a bourgeois Ottoman family, was the niece of Mihri Müþfik Haným (1886-1954), one of Turkey's first female painters. She studied in Rome in 1919, then the following year in Paris. She studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with Lovis Corinth and Arthur von Kampf, then in France, from 1927 to 1928, where she took classes with André Lhote. She exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1928, the Salon des Tuileries in 1933, and the Salons d'Automne and des Indépendants in 1935. It was probably at this time that she met Paul Henri Michel, a scholar with many projects in both art history and science. He later became curator of the Mazarine library (1939-1959). She met the Italian writer Antonio Aniante, who ran the Jeune Europe gallery-library, and Hale Asaf later became its director. The gallery closed in 1934, and Antonio Aniante's books were banned in some parts of Europe because of his opposition to Benito Mussolini. Hale Asaf died of cancer in Paris in 1938, aged thirty-three. Some of his paintings were destroyed during the Second World War.
