Note: Liu Ruo Wang belongs to a generation divided between ancient Chinese traditions and Western influence. Through his work, he aims to promote and respect tradition while integrating the cultural change of the West.
Indeed, his figures in the "The East is red" series refer to the Xi'an Terracotta Funerary Army, and their red faces symbolize Guan Yu, the Han general (225-220 BC) considered one of China's greatest military heroes, known for his courage and sense of honor. And by using bronze, the artist shows his willingness to adapt to Western artistic trends.
