President Paul Doumer's vehicle pennant, tricolor, with bifacially embroidered initials "PD" and edged with gold fringe. BE 38.5 x 48.5 cm (minor wear, foxing).
Doumer Joseph Athanase, known as Paul (1857 - 1932) Of modest origins, he obtained his primary school certificate and began an apprenticeship as a messenger and engraver, but continued his studies, obtaining his baccalauréat ès sciences in 1876 and becoming a mathematics teacher. He campaigned for education for all. He had eight children, four of whom died for France in the First World War and one in the Second. Elected to the French Parliament in 1888, he became Chief of Staff to the President of the Chamber of Deputies. In 1895, he was Minister of Finance, then Governor General of Indochina from 1897 to 1902. In 1912, he was elected Senator. In 1927, he was elected President of the Senate, and in 1931, President of the Republic. During the inauguration of an exhibition organized by the Association des écrivains combattants, he was the victim of an assassination attempt, and died as a result.
