Albert Lebrun President's vehicle pennant, tricolor, with two-sided embroidered initials "AL" and edged with gold fringe. BE 40 x 57 cm (minor wear, foxing) Lebrun Albert (1871 - 1950) Son of a farmer, he studied in Nancy, graduating top of his class from the École polytechnique and the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris. In 1898, he was elected General Councillor for Meurthe et Moselle, in 1900 Deputy, from 1911 to 1914 Minister for the Colonies and Liberated Regions in 1917-1919, in 1920 Senator, then President in 1931. Following the assassination of Paul Doumer, he was elected President of the Republic. After the events of February 6, 1934, he appointed a cabinet of national unity, and in 1936 saw the rise to power of the Front Populaire and Léon Blum. In 1939, he was re-elected. Following France's military defeat, he appointed Marshal Pétain as President of the Council, who signed an armistice with Germany. In 1943, he was kidnapped by the Germans and detained in the Tyrol.
