Note: French painter associated with cubism and abstraction.
He discovered Cézanne's work at the Salon d'Automne retrospective in 1907. From 1919 onwards, his paintings began to feature figures treated in discontinuous planes, where shapes overlap and interweave in large, unmodulated, almost abstract flat tints of color. It wasn't until 1930 that the artist made a definitive shift to abstraction, joining the Abstraction-Création collective alongside artists such as Jean Arp to counter the influence of André Breton's Surrealist group.
