Geer Van VELDE (1898-1977). - Lot 16
Geer Van VELDE (1898-1977). Composition, circa 1955-1960. Watercolor over pencil lines, monogrammed lower right. On the back: two labels from Galerie Louis Carré, Paris, with references A 126. Sight: Height 21.5 cm - Width 20.7 cm Invoice and certificate of authenticity dated October 12, 2007 are enclosed. Provenance: - Galerie Louis Carré Cie, Paris ; - Private collection, Paris. Work listed in the Geer Van VELDE archives under reference AB8. Note: Geer van Velde is Bram's younger brother, with whom he shares the same passion for painting. In 1925, he joined his brother in Paris, where he settled permanently to devote himself fully to his art. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1928-29-30. In 1938, he exhibited at Guggenheim Jeune in London, then in 1947 at Aimé Maeght, and in 1948 at the Kootz Gallery in New York. He participated in major international exhibitions and cultural events. His work is characterized by rigorous geometric compositions and soft, luminous colors. In the 1950s, drawing faded away in favor of a play between color planes that dislocate against a light background. His interest in architecture brought him closer to the Dutch painters of the Golden Age, notably Vermeer and Saenredam, in their attention to space and light, but here reducing objects to geometric forms.
