Jean HELION (1904-1987). - Lot 18
Jean HELION (1904-1987). Man with hat and reader, New York, 1944. Watercolor over pencil and ink signed, located and dated 1944 lower right. Height 11.5 cm - Width: 27.5 cm Purchase invoice dated October 23, 2007. The work will be included in the forthcoming catalog raisonné of Jean HELION's works on paper. Provenance : - Paris, Calmels-Cohen, sale April 3, 2006, n° 205 ; - Galerie Applicat-Prazan, Paris; - Private collection, Paris. Note: Jean Hélion, whose real name was Jean Bichier, was a French painter whose style oscillated between abstraction and figuration. He took part in the Art Concret group and the Abstraction-Création collective. A friend of Calder, Arp and Giacometti, he was also close to Max Ernst and Victor Brauner, as well as to the writers of his time, such as Francis Ponge and René Char, and never ceased to associate them with his artistic career. In 1934, he moved to the United States, where he befriended Marcel Duchamp. He became one of the most important protagonists of abstraction and a prominent figure in American artistic life, advising major collectors. Yet the following year, his forms came to life, foreshadowing a return to the human figure. Our work, part of the series of Heads of Men with Hats that began in 1939, marks his return to figuration, and testifies to his interest in everyday life and street scenes.
