Alfred MANESSIER (1911- 1993). - Lot 38
Alfred MANESSIER (1911- 1993). Untitled, 1967. Oil on panel, signed and dated lower left. Height 11.5 cm - Width 20 cm Provenance : - Galerie Applicat-Prazan, Paris. - Private collection, Paris. Note: Alfred Manessier worked at the Académie Ranson in Roger Bissière's studio with his friend Jean le Moal. In 1932, he visited the Netherlands and discovered the work of Mondrian, who was to influence him. He worked with Delaunay on the Pavillon de l'Air et des Chemins- de-fer at the 1937 Universal Exhibition in Paris. From the 1940s, he turned to abstraction. Inspired by the Flemish masters and the Impressionists, he developed a plastic language based on color, movement and light. In 1943, during a retreat at the Trappe de Soligny, his artistic approach was transformed, as he set out to convey a mystical dimension in his compositions through chromatic harmonies and free gestures. He went on to create numerous stained-glass windows for religious buildings, modernizing sacred art in the process. His work was exhibited in galleries such as René Drouin, with whom he signed a contract from 1944 to 1948, Jeanne Bucher in Paris, and Pierre Matisse in New York, where he had a solo show in 1953. Alfred Manessier (1911-1993) was a French painter and master glassmaker, a leading figure in lyrical abstraction. Appraisal by Mr. Irénée BRUN - 01 42 60 45 45 - brun.perazzone@gmail.com
