This term, introduced in 1925 by the German art critic Franz ROH, describes elements perceived as magical and irrational within a realistic environment. Michel Renault (1927-1993), a leading figure in French dance and a star of the Paris Opera, went on to enjoy an international career as an actor and teacher at the American Ballet Theater in New York and at the Conservatoire National de Boulogne-sur-Seine, where he created a boys' class.
