Chased and gilded bronze "cartel au ruban" sconce (wear), fe - Lot 139
Chased and gilded bronze "cartel au ruban" sconce (wear), featuring a female mask topped by an antique-style fire pot adorned with canals and rosettes, with a long ribbon running through the handles. The sides are decorated with palms, and the lower part features a laurel-leaf garland, with a seeded lamp base and frieze of fleurons. The white enameled circular dial (chips) with black Arabic and Roman numerals and the movement are signed Warin A Paris / Du soleil dor (reported). Louis XVI period. Height 70 cm - Width 32 cm Note: the original drawing of a comparable cartel appears in Osmond's Livre des Desseins under number 36, INHA library, known as the cartel au ruban grand modèle. Created by Robert Osmond around 1770, this model was a great success with Parisian connoisseurs. Two examples were included in royal collections, the first delivered in 1767 for the apartments of Madame Victoire in Versailles, and the second, a few years later, for King Louis XVI, still Dauphin. Robert Osmond (1711-1789) was awarded the title of Master Bronzemaker in Paris in 1746. A champion of neoclassicism, he also produced numerous rocaille clock cases. Bibliography : - H.
