Breviarium ad usum Oridinis Cartusiani. Paris, Jolanda Bonho - Lot 12
Breviarium ad usum Oridinis Cartusiani. Paris, Jolanda Bonhomme, 1551. In-16, rare breviary of the Carthusian Order printed in Gothic type by Yolande Bonhomme, widow of Thielmann Kerver, illustrated with a large woodcut on the title depicting Saint Bruno. Fully ruled copy. Bound in full contemporary brown calf with metal clasps, boards decorated with cold filets, central medallion and gilded fleurons in the spandrels, all edges gilt. Ex-libris Lardanchet, Lud. Chefdeville and Charles Moncorgé. Handwritten ex-donations in the colophon, notably Chanlaire [Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire ?]. Copy enriched with a fragment of red cloth on the second flyleaf, embellished with silver threads on a yellow silk core, accompanied by a handwritten inscription signed by Chefdeville stating: "This small piece of red cloth is very precious: it comes from the lining of the envelope of the breviary of the good King Saint Louis, a manuscript that can be seen at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. I got this little relic from my friend Cordier [Louis Cordiez], assistant curator." It could be a piece of the embroidered silk chemise made by Charles V to protect the psalter known as "de Blanche de Castille et de Saint Louis", from which red taffeta panels had been sewn to the reverse of the lining to accommodate the book's plates. Provenance: Josy Mazodier Library. (spine completely rebound, notice pasted on white endpaper, handwritten annotations on front cover and colophon). Expert: Mr. Nicolas Asvisio
