La sainte Bible contenant le vieil nouveau testament. Paris, - Lot 16
La sainte Bible contenant le vieil nouveau testament. Paris, Sébastien Nyvelle, 1568.
In-4, first part only illustrated with 9 in-text woodcuts comprising only the first part of the Old Testament of this new edition of the Bible by René Benoist, parish priest of Saint-Eustache, dean of the Paris faculty of theology, doctor of Sorbonne and confessor to Henri IV, nicknamed the Pope of the Halles.
Bound in full contemporary fawn calf, with triple filleted boards decorated with a central medallion and spandrels of interlacing and foliate foliage on an azure background, 5-ribbed spine, all edges gilt.
A fully-regulated copy, exceptionally enriched with the book's censor book, bound at the head and illustrated with a woodcut vignette. Despite the general privilege enjoyed by René Benoist, his version of the Bible, originally published in 1566, was censored for Calvinism and banned from sale. However, printers did not respect the ban, and Benoist's Bible continued to appear.
Handwritten bibliographical inscription on the flyleaf.
Ex-libris Josy Mazodier and handwritten ex-libris of the Jesuit College of Clermont on a strip of paper glued to the title.
(slight damage to binding, restorations to jaws, corners and headpieces, partial detachment of restoration leather at upper jaw, bookplate cut off on flyleaf, tiny wormholes on flyleaf affecting margins of title page and first few leaves, former bookplate scratched and covered by a small strip of paper, ink on first page of censorship book slightly faded, light foxing).
