Nicholas I Pavlovich Romanov was born on July 6, 1796 in Gatchina and died on March 2, 1855 in St. Petersburg. He was the son of Paul I and Sophie Dorothée de Wurtemberg, and therefore the brother of Alexander I. He was Emperor of Russia, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland from December 1, 1825 until his death. The reign of the "most logical of autocrats" was marked by extreme conservatism, both in domestic and foreign policy.
