Leo XIII was the author of 86 encyclicals, in which he set out to define the position of the Catholic Church in the face of the modern world. He sees pastoral action in society as an essential mission of the Church, called to defend the rights and dignity of every individual. With the encyclical Æterni Patris, the Pope also gave new impetus to Thomism, the philosophical and theological system of Thomas Aquinas, which he established as an intellectual reference for the Church.
