One month after the inauguration of his equestrian statue of Vercingetorix, Place de Jaude, in Clermont-Ferrand, Bartholdi comes up against the Town
Hall concerning the regulation of the decorative elements of the monument. He has advanced the costs of the ornaments, moulding and casting and has been waiting since September for a refund from the Town Hall: "All this is money paid by me; it's a rare situation for an artist" . Another L.A.S., December 2, 1809 (2 p. in-8), is attached, declining the invitation to be part of the jury "for the competition of the monument of General de Lariboisière [...] Unfortunately, I have an old mother who has been affected by a beginning of bronchitis, and as she is 90 years old, the thing can become worrisome "...
