Long and beautiful letter of explanations. He regrets having called him Judas and apologizes: "You know better than anyone how certain mediocrity hurts me, disgusts me, prevents me from working. ...] Since we left Marseilles, I see you slumped over yourself, busy with nonsense, incapable of freeing yourself - even with me - from the atmosphere of family discord from which you had hoped to emerge. He speaks of the wife of Bénier, against whom he has no grudge, but who knows the drama of a great number of women. She is to be pitied, of course, but she must not sink out of sadness "into indifference, idleness, disgust, moral and physical filth. Others, who were worthy of you, or better than you, did not get out of this glue. I know what I'm talking about. I think I always know what I'm talking about. I am hardly above the trials that I don't think you're capable of overcoming. I offer my poor life to my friends, not as a model at all, but as a painful experience, which should serve them well ...
