A suite of four finely chased and gilded bronze sconces, the - Lot 149
A suite of four finely chased and gilded bronze sconces, the shaft formed of a winged putto emerging from a sheath of acanthus leaves and supporting a basket from which escapes a bouquet of five lights in the shape of a horn of plenty decorated with rich foliated scrolls, fleurons and stylized palmettes (pierced for electricity). First quarter of the 19th century, attributed to Claude GALLE (1759-1815). High. 45 cm - Width: 28 cm - Depth: 32 cm Our suite of sconces is a singular variant of a successful model which was the subject of several orders by the Imperial Garde-Meuble between 1808 and 1813. Around 1808 a first model was designed by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) for the Emperor's bedroom in the Palace of Fontainebleau, as well as three other pairs for the Grand Salon of the Empress. These were chubby cherubs with childlike faces. The following year the Garde-Meuble ordered a variant from Claude Galle (1759-1815) to enliven the walls of the Salon des Malachites at the Grand Trianon in Versailles. The bronze-maker André-Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814) was also commissioned to deliver a new variant in smaller dimensions, with six lights in the shape of a hunting horn. Thomire will deliver a new derivation for the princes' bedroom at the Château de Fontainebleau. By offering more mature faces and more designed busts than those executed by Thomire our suite of sconces differs somewhat from the models mentioned above. The wings, widely spread out towards the sky, are to be compared to Claude Galle's model, without being completely similar. Moreover, the arms of our putti are devoid of rushes. Their chasing and gilding are of a remarkable quality.
