Carved limewood Saint John, the back hollowed... - Lot 126 - Le Floc'h
Carved limewood Saint John, the back hollowed out (missing the right hand, restorations, notably the left hand and the chalice). Southern Germany, Swabia, workshop of Niclaus Weckmann, late 15th century. Height : 93,5 cm We recognize here the usual attributes of the formal repertoire of Weckmann's production: "there is a decorative breadth of drapery, a quiet grace and a carnal fullness" as Sophie Guillot de Suduiraut so well puts it. The folds in the shape of a "fish bladder", but also the triangular points or the hooked appendages can be observed on the flap of the coat of this sculpture. The way in which the hair is made up of thick, finely striated and wavy strands, the ends of which are rolled up, is similar to the productions of Weckmann's workshop. Book consulted : Sophie Guillot de Suduiraut, Dévotion et séduction, Sculptures souabes des musées de France vers 1460-1530, Paris, 2015, p. 160-182.
