Exhibition: Société des Artistes Décorateur, Paris 1959. Note: Driven since childhood by a taste for decoration, Jean Royère radically changed his life at the age of 29, leaving Le Havre and the business world for, as he put it, "Paris and the Faubourg, the Faubourg Saint-Antoine". He joined Maison Gouffé through a friend in 1934, which enabled him to exhibit at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon de la Société des artistes décorateurs. After only two years' experience, he won the competition to install and furnish a large brasserie on the Champs-Elysées. This project launched his reputation. He was subsequently entrusted with numerous projects, including the interior fittings for the famous Le Fouquet's restaurant on the Champs-Élysées, and the fitting out of the private apartments of the captain of the ocean liner France. His world remains unique, distinguished by his choice of a wide range of materials, including wood, metal and straw. Part of his inspiration comes from nature, as illustrated by his famous "liane" floor lamp, which he presented at the 1959 Salon des artistes décorateurs.
