Jean Claude NAIGEON (Dijon, 1753 - 1832). Coffee... - Lot 32 - Le Floc'h
Jean Claude NAIGEON (Dijon, 1753 - 1832). Coffee on the terrace. Oil on canvas signed lower right: Naigeon in Rome 17... (the last two figures are difficult to read, old restorations). High. 98 cm - Width: 74 cm Provenance: anonymous sale, Hôtel Drouot, Me Henri Baudouin, June 14, 1946, n°52 Exhibition: La Vie Familiale Paris Scènes et portraits, Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 1944, not paginated, n°107 as "Le peintre et sa Famille, 1793". Essentially a history painter, Jean-Claude Naigeon also left a few portraits. These include "Dijon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, acquired in 1920", also outside, and the "Family Portrait", dated 1789, kept at the Springfield Museum. Portrait of the Rosanbo family (canvas 96 x 133 cm, dated 1808, anonymous sale, Arcole, Drouot, 6 June 1990, lot 64). These works bear witness to the English influence, to Danloux's works and are inspired by the "conversation pieces". In the centre of our painting, we notice the bust of Rousseau by Houdon, as well as his motto "Vitam Impedere Vero" meaning "To consecrate one's life to the Truth" taken from the satirical poet Juvénal.
